Two Spirits, Coyote #189. 2019

This drawing is made with an assortment of materials that include acrylic paint, oil stick, coffee grounds, matte medium, and spray paint. I am striving to create layers. Some of the marks are intentional and the others are random. I am reminded of amateur food signs at an annual carnival at a local church. It also reminds me of rainbow printed wrestling posters in Richmond, Virginia in the late 1970’s. I wish I had removed the expired posters from the telephone poles.

June 19, 2019. Two Spirits, Monarch

Two Spirits, Monarch Butterfly is the title of this wall panel. The armature is two discarded plastic corrugated political signs from my wife’s recent campaign. Layers of fabric cover the rectangles. I broke a number of needles sewing. I am excited about the rich surfaces.

June 12, 2019. Spirit Gathering

Laurel is my amazing wife of almost 38 years. She has been an exceptional medium for about two decades. We joined a Spiritualist Church in Michigan City, Indiana for about five years. We helped found a Spiritualist Church in New Troy, Michigan that lasted about seven years.

We now have a closed circle that meets once a week. Usually three women friends join us at the table. Yesterday we gathered. We meet about 6:30 pm. We use the enamel top laundry table that belonged to my mother. We enjoyed numerous communications. My visits included Clear Water. She is a spirit guide. Her message was for me that I will be working more on my emotional healing. She also provided a boost. My second round was a message from my family group in spirit. They also sent me a boost which I can use having ended my second semester as an art teacher. My third visit was by F.A. who is one of my paternal uncles. He flew planes in World War II. His message indicated that my “battle” was over concerning a recent issue. I am most relieved. My last guest from the other side was my best friend, Loren. He supporting my art making and creativity.

Everyone at the table had visits by their respective spirit guides, spirit friends, spirit family, pets, etc. We usually end the session with a big bowl of popcorn and chocolate candy. We have been enjoying this comforting phenomena for about five years in our home.

This is the first Tuesday of my summer vacation. I worked on a small wall panel. It is made of two plastic corrugated political signs, fabric, plastic cat litter bag, beads, window screen, etc. I am stitching down the wrinkles. I have to use a wrench to pull the threaded needle through the plastic. I look forward to transforming the surface more.

I am thrilled to upload the photograph of my newest wall panel “Two Spirits, Xinjiang”. I fabricated it with an assortment of materials from discarded plastic cat litter bags, window screen, fabrics, thread, acrylic paints, etc. This artwork anticipates a visit to China this year with our friend, Lynn Song and her husband. She teaches English at the Zhangdian Experimental Middle School. I met Lynn when she was an exchange teacher at Marquette Catholic High School in Michigan City, Indiana in 2016.
